Used Outboard Motors

How To Find Used Outboard Motors

On of the most essential piece of equipment for anyone who ownes a boat is the motor. They are however quite expensive and everyone is wandering how to find used outboard motors.

When you need a new motor there are of course a few things that you need to consider. You simply can't just go out and buy the first motor you find. And going through all the used outboard motors out there is no easy task.

Buying a new motor can be really expensive but it's usually very safe. Buying a used one can be safe as well but you need to know what to look for and what to avoid. Try sticking to authorised dealers and be very careful if you buy directly from someone. Buying a motor directly from someone usually means a very good price, especially if you know what you are doing, i.e. if you know you motors. But where to look and how to find thos.. well here are my guidlines on how to find outboard motors for sale.

First I would like to mention the classified ads in your local newspaper. They are usually well sorted so it's easy to check real quick if they have any used outboard motors. You need to be patient with this one and keep looking week after week. Make sure you always get the Sunday edition as these usually have the most ads. If you find that you are having no luck at all you might want to consider putting an ad in the "want to buy" section. Someone might be willing to sell their motor, they just don't know it yet.

Another great way to find used outboard motors is to visit local bait and tackel shops. Fishermens visit these on a regular basis so these ofter have flyers hangin or a bulletin board with ads on boats and related items. These could also be the perfect places for you to put up an ad, asking to buy one. This will usually not cost you a dime! You also might want to check out if the local grocery stores have a bulletin board. Both for you to take a look at and to put an ad up.

One of my favorite methods is using the power of the internet. Just using google will give you plenty of ads to go through and there are literally hundreds of classified ads and bulletin boards like US FreeAds to search through. You might also want to check out Craigslist, that would also be the perfect place for you to place a "looking for a used outboard motor" ad.

Finally you could just ask around. There are usually plenty of people at the docks so ask around and spread the word that you would like to take a look at some used outboard motors. You might even bring a card with your name and number or an email to leave with people if they should come across someone with a used motor to sell.

And that's all I have on that. Good luck.
